You don’t have to be a medical expert to help a loved one get quality, affordable health care and improved health outcomes. You can learn how to transform your loved one’s healthcare journey.
Hi, I’m Holly Olson. I help everyday caregivers understand our mind-boggling healthcare system and give them tools and confidence to help their loved ones get the care they deserve—without it costing a fortune.
Prepared with the right information, questions, and confidence, anyone can learn to be a patient advocate. This website offers free reliable resources, practical information, and guidance to put you in control of your loved one’s health care.
Do you feel overwhelmed and stressed out by a new medical diagnosis? Tired of repetitive healthcare forms? Sick of spending hours on the phone inquiring about medical claims? Our healthcare system is often so complicated, it’s easy to be confused about the choices we have and the steps we need to take. Medical professionals can sometimes be brusque and intimidating. You may not know what questions to ask, or whether you are even entitled to ask
them!
And then there’s the ever-present anxiety of how to pay the medical bills, and get what you are owed from your health insurance carrier….
After a loved one’s accident or diagnosis, on top of everything else, suddenly being thrust into the role of patient advocate can be overwhelming and scary.
Let me help you.
I’ve been in your shoes and I understand. I remember vividly those first days and weeks after my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s dementia. Not only was it devastating to my family that her memory was slipping away, but there was also a flurry of doctor’s appointments, psychological tests, and new medications to manage. My parent’s otherwise peaceful rural lifestyle was turned upside down, and suddenly I was responsible for their care.
Shortly after her diagnosis, my mother spent five days in a hospital with an excellent reputation. Even though she received good care, it was so difficult to get important information. The nurses couldn’t even tell us when the doctors made rounds, and it was infuriating when we would miss them because we had left her bedside for a moment just to use the bathroom!
Everything during this time was complex and confusing. Fortunately, I was able to use my background in healthcare to ask the right questions. In the end I found my mother the best doctors and made sure she got the treatment and prescriptions she needed. And through plenty of trial and error, I learned how to deal with her insurance company to get claims paid.
Even with my background in healthcare, being my mother’s patient advocate was overwhelming at times. But it was also deeply satisfying. That’s when I realized I could help other caregivers learn how to navigate our healthcare system and advocate for their loved ones as well.
I feel really good about my role as caregiver for my elderly parents. I believe you, too, can learn to be an effective patient advocate. I’m passionate about teaching other caregivers how to speak up, ask questions, and understand patient rights and treatment options.

More about Holly.
Hi, I’m Holly. I received a BS degree in Medical Technology from Wright State University, earned an MS in Health Informatics from Jacksonville University, and am a Board Certified Patient Advocate (BCPA). I’ve worked in hospital laboratories, a private paternity laboratory, and in organ and tissue transplantation. Currently, I perform consulting services and blog to teach others how to be outstanding patient advocates.
In my spare time, I enjoy hikes with my family and two dogs. I love to travel and obsess over how to pack for a month-long European adventure in a carry-on backpack. I also adore reading and can finish a 1,000-page novel in one weekend.
